I first met Bruce in 5th grade at Chamberlain Elementary in Kanawha City. Bruce was an amazing guy and a great friend.  He could beat my socks off at tennis and totally destroy me at chess. He and his wife, Judy, became missionaries in Japan and were there for about 25 years. He was linguistics professor at the highly esteemed Meiji Gakuin University. He also wrote and co-wrote several books. He was active in his church and often taught Sunday school. Bruce was working on a new book when he passed. Their three children, Lisle, Chris, and Denise, all grew up in Japan and are fluent in Japanese. Lisle (pronounced like the oldest von Trapp daughter) is an actress and acted on Japanese television. She was the “sexy business woman” in the movie Lost In Translation with Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansson. Chris and Denise also have successful careers. Bruce’s life was a life well lived because early on he obeyed the Biblical command, “Seek the Lord while He may be found” (Isaiah 55:6).
