Obituary for Hal W. Guthrie, Sr.

Mr. Hal W. Guthrie, Sr., 76, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2020, at his home in Southaven, MS. A visitation will be held Wednesday, August 26, 2020, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven (626 Star Landing Rd., Southaven, MS 38672). A funeral service will immediately follow at 5:00 p.m., also at Coleman Funeral Home. Interment will be at his beloved cemetery, Desoto Memorial Gardens. Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Guthrie was born in Charleston, WV, on November 30, 1943. In his younger years, he attended both Memphis State University and the University of West Virginia on a football scholarship. After college, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He received many badges during his service, one of which was a Purple Heart. Mr. Guthrie was known to be an extremely hard worker, and he always had big aspirations for his future. He was a “Jack of all trades,” if you will, working as a truck driver, developer, and an entrepreneur. Even though he was a hard worker, he loved nothing more than having a good time with his friends and family. He had an enormous personality, and he was definitely known to be an entertainer. He absolutely loved cooking out and more importantly, cooking for others. He also enjoyed going to the river with his family and spending time in the outdoors in general. He was such a kind-hearted, fun-loving individual that would give the shirt off of his back to anyone in need. Mr. Guthrie will truly be missed.

Mr. Guthrie is survived by four daughters, Kim (Tim) Williams and Amy (Mickey) Davis, both of Hernando, MS, Lisa (Tim) Paxton of Nesbit, MS, and Lynda (Kenny) Fier of Benton, AR; three sons, Hal Wayne Guthrie, Jr. and Chance Guthrie, both of Southaven, and Steven Neu of WV; three granddaughters, Audrey (Sean) Morell, Ellen Fier, and Olivia (Miles) Morgan; five grandsons, Cale Williams, William Davis, Walker Davis, Cayleb Paxton, and Avery (Danielle) Paxton; one great-granddaughter, Amelia Morell; and one brother, Hugh Guthrie of Southaven.

Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by his parents, Roy T. Guthrie and Della M. Guthrie.

In honor of Mr. Hal W. Guthrie, Sr.’s service to our country, the flag of the United States Army will be flown the day of the services.
